A Postcard Come to Life

From the moment I landed, Malta felt like stepping into a living postcard. The architecture is this warm honey color that glows in the sunlight, and everywhere you turn, there’s this mix of old and new—classic European vibes with a splash of modernity.

Valletta, the island’s capital, is an absolute gem. The cobblestone streets are lined with colorful balconies, which Malta is known for. The city isn’t huge, so it’s perfect for exploring on foot. Every little street feels like it’s hiding something magical—cute cafes, stunning views of the harbor, or historic landmarks that make you feel like you’ve time-traveled.

But be careful. You will need a lot of energy while exploring, especially when going up.

The streets are quite narrow and Maltese are used to it, they drive efficiently even on sidewalks if needed. They drive on the left side ( like in the UK), and I have to admit that I didn’t have the courage to rent a car while staying there. There are plenty of other options as well, bikes, scooters, etc.

Valletta is the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re walking through a movie set. Fun fact: Did you know that some sets of Game of Thrones were filmed in Mdina, also known as the Silent City? In this beautifully preserved medieval town cars aren’t allowed. Interesting, isn’t it?

This fountain is one of the first things you see when you arrive in Valletta, and it’s kind of the perfect intro to the city. Absolutely stunning, if you ask me.

I spent the day exploring the Upper Barrakka Gardens (a must for panoramic harbor views), popping into St. John’s Co-Cathedral (seriously stunning interiors), and just getting “lost” in the alleys.

Seaside Bliss in St. Julian’s

Imagine waking up to this every morning.

I stayed in St. Julian’s, which is known for its nightlife but also has some of the most stunning resorts and coastal vibes. My hotel had this incredible pool area overlooking the sea, and honestly, I spent more time here than I’d like to admit. Can you blame me, though? It was perfect for lazy mornings sipping coffee, reading a book, and just soaking up that salty sea breeze.

Sliema’s Waterfront Magic

This spot in Sliema is just magical. I adored spending the day here.

The little fishing boats bobbing in the crystal-clear water, the pastel buildings in the distance—ugh, I could’ve stayed here forever. I spent a couple of hours just wandering along the waterfront, grabbing gelato from a nearby stand, and enjoying the slower pace. If you’re into photography, this area is an absolute goldmine for snaps.

There’s also a ferry that runs between Sliema and Valletta (super affordable and only takes 10 minutes). It’s such a fun way to get around and gives you a gorgeous view of Malta’s coastline.

Food, Glorious Food

Let me just say this: Malta knows how to do food. Whether it’s fresh seafood, hearty stews, or the island’s signature snacks, everything is ridiculously good.

Pastizzi: These flaky little pastries filled with ricotta or peas are everywhere, and I may or may not have eaten them every single day ( ricotta, I didn’t like peas). Don’t judge.

Seafood: I had the BEST grilled fish at a seaside spot in Marsaxlokk, a charming fishing village about 30 minutes from Valletta. If you’re a seafood lover, this is your spot.

Cisk Beer: Malta’s local beer is light, refreshing, and perfect for those hot sunny afternoons by the pool.

Why Malta Should Be On Your List

Malta isn’t just a destination; it’s a vibe. It’s a mix of relaxation and adventure, with stunning views everywhere you look and a history that’s so rich you can’t help but be amazed. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, wandering through Valletta, or marveling at the natural beauty of places like the Blue Lagoon (still on my bucket list for next time), this little island will steal your heart.

So, if you’re craving a getaway that’s equal parts chill and exciting, Malta might just be your dream destination. I know I’ll be back soon—next time with even more gelato and maybe a brave attempt at cliff diving (Wish me luck!).
